INSIDE-OUTTA THEIR DANGED MINDS:
The Actor's Studio celebrates it's 75th Anniversary by ERASING it's own HISTORY!
An’ ya thought that erasin’ the entire history’ve our nay-shun wuz enough’ve a durned shame, no? On a grand scale sure, but now’daze, EACH an’ EVERY lil’ ol’ institution must individually erase their true an’ noble an’ fine accomplishments, delete all vestiges of their former / an’ formerly-famous identities, and MELT compliantly into a a happy-tailed re-branded re-written puddle of woke BULLSHART.
Thus, today’s “scoop” is a hefty journey inta the depths of one such “poopie” absurd-ditty.
First “TRIGGER” YER MEMORY
I know I know, it’s TRAUMATIC-DRAMATIC… When you think’a New Yawk’s famous draw-ma school, The Actors Studio, do ya think’a THIS?
Or… THIS?
OR EVEN this?!:
Cuz ya know what? ONLY the top photo is key-recht! Marlon WAS a genuine Actors’ Studio student.
Yer all thinkin’ Daisy’s off her rocker showin’ these festive TAINO Native Dancers here? Why the joint isn’t a dance studio let alone an’ indiginous one, right? An’ y’all know already that Brando an’ all them intensely METHODical actors warn’t by any means members of an all-BIPOC-BLACK n’ BROWN BLOCKBUSTER cump’ny, now were they? (Were they?)
Wull, some lil’ mockin’boids say yer wrong… DING! cuz… in history rewrite time:
Lookee what “landed” in mah inbox jus’ today—highlighted in ga-lumin-ious GASLIGHT GREEN! (my highlightin’)
Is that enuf woke on yer salad plate? How many arrows POINT POINT POINT ta the DEI-itty of divers-city/eke-quitty/ink-clusion? How much BLACK SUFFERIN’ (due ta racial injustice) kin the mostly (nearly all?) white patrons apologize fer? Lemme count the ways! But surely this all has SOMETHING to do with the actual history of The Actors’ Studio, no? NO! Zilch.
Surely (also known as Shirley!) you’d think from this celebratory schedule in honor of the 75th Birthday of The Actor’s Studio that the joint, historically (or histrionically!), has been a home of Taino Toe Tappin’ Palm-frond waivin’ bliss? An’ ya’d assume that the history of this illustrious school has just been a bee-u-tee-ful bevy’ve BIPOC achievements, no? NO. Not a whit, not a mite…
Now if yer celebratin’ yer 75th Year IN BIZNESS as a famous actin’ school, ya’d think someone’d wanna at least drag out (or even list) a couple few of yer alumni of renown, no? Some are still livin’ after all. NO? NO. Why not? Because they do not fit in the right “costumes” and they are too (sorry ta say…) melanin-deprived to be SHOWN on the announcement. (jaw-drop)
Wait up folks… the HIDDEN HISTORY of The Actors’ Studio is about ta be…leaked!
IF these walls could talk…
That’s the place. And y'all, ya know if ya’ve been reading this Stack that actin' is one'a my "beats" (an' whar I got beat up bein' un-employ-a-BULL as one'a the unjabbed unter-mention’d in NYSeize’s plandemic central…) but even me/myself/n' EYE kin be surprised by the audacity to Woke-a-Fry hist'ry in the world of Thee-Ate-'Er.
To wit, The Actor's Studio—now I'm'a gonna call it the Act-Turds Stoodie (rhymes with doody)-Oh—is celebratin' it's illustrious 75th Anniversary with an ignominious ILLUSION.
NONE of the famous alums were BIPOC/TAINO/ or even (sorry Uncle Charlie ta throw ya a curveball…BLACK). Surely some? Nope. NONE.
Now, don’t git yer knickers in a bunch—
The place WUZ indeed a veritable meltin' pot've ethnic diversity !
(see more'on that below)
BUT (but but) the hard-workin' talents that FOUNDED the place… that bought FAME & GLORY to this studio by dint' ve deep talent, sweat, trials/tribulations/cattle calls, an' endless blows ta ego (don’t read yer reviews!) an' equally endless bouts've stomick butterflies every time they entered stage left—all these folks got—ERASED!
By who? By the dang BRAINTRUST of the ActTurds Stoodie-OH… clearly on drugz:
Now, I know many've ya readers may not recognize all the names I'm a gonna list as this ain’t yer wheelhouse, but THIS IS A SHORT LIST of many 've the TRULY famous founders, graduates, and collaborators (in the best sense've the term—eg. playwrigts, instructors) with the historic entity know as The Actors’ Studio (in no partick-u-lar order):
'T AIN'T NECESSARILY SO… (ain't so at all!)
Welcome back, it’s a long list, eh?
I'm sure even if yer not all that keen on actors/actin' history ya recognized a LOTTA famous names on the above list. See a lotta actors've "color" there? Errr… WHERE?
Now, The Actors Studio was founded in 1947 by Elia Kazan, Cheryl Crawford, Robert Lewis and Anna Sokolow, to provide training for actors. Lee Strasberg joined later and became its director in 1951. The Actors Studio is known for teaching METHOD ACTING, as it evolved out of the Group Theatre (“think” Maria Ouspenskaya) in the 1930s and the ideas of Constantin Stanislavski, which he developed at the Moscow Art Theater. (Thank Russia Russia Russia!)
Now ya might notice on the list (of all who were involved) relatively few Mayflower "White Bread" Waspian Americans (Fonda an' a few others were exceptions).
Now I like everyone from everywhar an' I could care less'bout looks ‘n race but HONESTLY FOLKS, most've the talents on this list came from a meltin' pot've foreign backgrounds: E. Europe includin' Jews (from Russia, Poland, Germany, Hungary, etc etc.), Greek/Turks (Kazan!), Irish, Italians (DeNiro, Bancroft, Gazarra!), Serbs (Malden), etc. (-Daisy)
Take an honest look at that list up thar and KINDLY pick out all the famous African Americans/Blacks that are on it. See ANY?..no, ya don't. I’m so sorry but they ain’t there fer a reason—they were not THERE.
Here’s a vintage class photo…
Now yup, I do see that fer the anniversary showcase they are doin' a short play by black playwright Charles Gordone who did INDEED have "something of a connection ta The Studio but the man's not exactly a household name—is he? I do not believe he was an in-house playwright there either…
The famed household names on the program—the likes’ve James Baldwin an' Lorraine "Raisin in the Sun" Hansberry— ARE bein' trotted out like some ol' mare with a purdy gam, but to my knowledge NEITHER of these folks ever worked directy and intensely with The Actor's Studio like, say, Tennessee Williams 'er Terence McNally 'er Edward Albee—three velly famous white gay guys that don't count cuz I fergit—male? white? sumthin' like that right?
Now look AGAIN at that list above an now pick out all the famous Latin American/Hispanic or even native Taino actors on it. NONE. Zero. ZIP.
Addin' too (not ta virtue signal but fer the sake'a bein' complete) that I'm also a big fan've many Latin / Latin American performers. I've written' more'n once about Rita Moreno an' Raoul Julia, Rita Hayworth (Romani/Spanish) an' even Carmen Miranda! Also admire scenery-eater Anthony Quinn (half Mexican/half Irish) 'at comes ta mind--BUT none of these fine performers (from what surely is a purdy long list…) had jack-all ta do with The Actor's Studio!.
YOU SAW THE LIST, YOU SAW THE PROGRAM—not one important performer on the list has been invited to celebrate 75 Years of The Actors’ Studio—none are given even one LITTLE thing to do with the 75th Anniversary honoring the acting school they made famous. THAT they are ALL LEFT OUT iz an outrage (!) an’ shows the rest’ve the world that those runnin’ these thee-HATE-hers have their woke-yolked brain-eggs on drugs, scrambled jus’ like in the viddeyo above. Crazy!
So as they say on the streets, Yo, what gives?! WHY? HOW?
THIS fair-haired thespian was the hard-workin’ face of The Actor’s Studio (and she WAS a VERY good actress, don’t tell Daisy it ain’t so; THEY may’ve messed with her good n’ plenty, but she had immense talent an’ wuz serious about her craft).
NOW, I certainly wanna say that of COURSE America had MANY fine theatrical actors & playwrights "of color" even back in the day includin' the late great Sidney Poitier (of Bahamanian heritage) who with fellow talent Harry Belafonte (Jamaican with Dutch/Scotts, and Sephardic Jewish who'd a thunk?!) was trained at the well-regarded American Negro Theater, an’ then there’s stentorian-voiced James Earl Jones (who had some Native American an' Irish heritage in'im too) trained at the very presitgious American Theater Wing, an’ Paul Robson ("school of life" training!), the multi-talented Ethel Waters (honed her voice’n talents in vaudeville an’ on the carnival circuit) 'er even later the exquisite Cicely Tyson (fashion model/self-taught) and so on. I mention some’ve their multi-heritaged backgrounds too cuz it’s not RIGHT ta “imagine” some purity of race circa 2023 that gives BIPOC performers new/full “ownership” of The Actors’ Studio AND elevated privilege on the “new” DIE (die die!) / dais that marks literally “colors” occasions such as this 75th Anniversary Celebration (while givin’ these folks fake credit fer something they didn’t even have a danged part of!).
An’ even among black and so-called bipoc actors—like many’ve us—they are a mix so why, based on “racial identity,” would ya give them a whole theater school, rich with “real” history as if it’s makin’ up fer that fact they weren’t a part’ve it? Why hand it over to a set of people that had nuthin’ ta do with the place an’ might not even be familiar with the legacy actors an’ directors that made it such a success? Why treat this as a turn-key business, turnin’ it over to the darkest bidder (at no cost at all!), based on only their elevated racial status and NOT grounded in the talents (ALONE) that set the real Actors’ Studio students head n’ shoulders above their peers? So the entire bizness is now arty-fish-ally set up to elevate many that have little claim to these “intersectionally awarded” honors. (How might the real “Studio Veterans” feel about this?)
My rant here iz NOT to diminish any of the talent of black or fer that matter Latin actors (lord knows in a recent post I was jus' talkin' bout the fine talents've actor James Baskett!), but folks…none could I find from most of the 75 years of The Actors Studio. Sure, there might've been some who didn't achive that level'a fame n' fortune, but of those whose names we know—whose works'll go down in film his'ry ('til they erase THAT too!), NONE ZIP GOOSE EGG were black or bipoc whatever they'ze now "celebratin' " at this, their 75-Year Anniversary.
A RELEVANT DIGRESSION: The Academy Museum of Hollywood
Shucks, it's like havin' a whole MUSEUM (that looks like a space station…hmmm…) ta document the hist'ry of Hollywood with NO MENTION that it wuz all (yessim it wuz…) founded by Jews an' was bolstered by a passle've fine Jewish talent APART from the cigar-chompin’ "bizness folks" that some imagine (wrongly) were only in it fer the gelt ($). And yes, this elephant-in-the-room type gaslighting just happened! And I should mention that the studio system FOSTERED the incredible talents of folks 've all faiths n' colors an' stripes! Yes, the “studio system” had its many issues—but think of all the phenomenal artistic work that graced them silver screens. (An’ while it’s now just “demo-crap” land, used ta be a nice mix polit-i-cully back in the day too!). Seems that today, givin’ anyone NOT bipoc or six genders credit is “uncool” an’ they cain’t figger out what ta do with the Jews (cuz bad pub-licit-ee Weinstein yadayada). So, sure, just git out that eraser so no-buddy’ll be triggered (?!). Hence this writing-out of the Jews from their own invention an’ insertin’ a new intersectional phony-baloney narrative that fits the newfangled “comfort zone” in virtue(all) signalin’. For frankly even the one supposedly non-Jewish studio folks cite in the mix’ve early studios, United Artists, had Jewish roots cuz handsome Douglas Fairbanks wuz half Jewish (who’d a nu?) an' co-founder Charlie Chaplin by his own admission likely had half or full Jewish ancestry as well). An’ this regardless of the faith in which they were raised. I just believe in givin’ credit where it’s DUE an’ to them that earned it—even if they’re old men in ugly 3-piece suits! An’ it ain’t about Jews as much as it’s about rewritin’ ALL history to serve a NWO Narrative.
So I do NOT CARE who is/ain't in the big picture've once it’s released as long as the CREDITS at the end of the movie are correct! I just do NOT like seein’ invented faux credits an’ folks erased or written out of the “script” they created—be they Greeks (with ‘er without “gifts”), Irish, Jews, Italians or even us LAYDEES!
AND now I know lotsa folks 'r hatin' on Hollyweird now/today—"me-too!" (ha!)—an' blamin' it all on "just" the "Chews" (oh, STOP IT!) but the guilty bad actors (and bad Act-Turds!) runnin’ the show in this twenty-foist sin-churry, are, honestly, a Chex Party Mix've all sorts’ve people, racially, culturally, religiously or not—not only "Chews" by a long stretch… Of course this is a'nudder story fer a'nudder time but apt here—cuz y'know, erasin' important history is NOT A GOOD THING!
But anyway…just as a digression, even if ya hate OLD Hollywood (not I!), ya cain't say it wuz founded by Pilgrims OR—as they're tryin' ta say—by black folks like Oscar Micheaux as they’ze doin’—however talented the man was, however “important” Lincoln Pictures was (…or warn’t) in the scheme of things. Hollywood was no more founded by blacks than the USA was “founded” just to promote slavery. Banana oil, soitenly don’t buy it!
Mebbe ya think I'm kiddin' ? –nope. THIS is the same damn woke/re-brand phenomenon as The Actors’ Studio celebration totally, re-writing THEIR /his-story, whoever he ze is!
In the piece on the erasure of Jews from film history, a descendant of one of the founders of 20th C. Fox studios asks:
"If these long-dead Jewish moguls could speak, I imagine they’d say, What are we, chopped liver?"
If Marlon Brando an' Geraldine Page (a'nuther favorite'a Daisy's..) an' Zero Mostel could speak, I'd HOPE they'd say the same danged thing!!!!! They are NOT chopped liver! I cain’t believe they’ve ALL been left out in the rain—like so much cake!— without so much as an umbrella or even a fork.
Of the Hollywood museum, another apt quote:
“It’s sort of like building a museum dedicated to Renaissance painting, and ignoring the Italians,” says Hollywood historian and Brandeis University professor Thomas Doherty. “
I'll DITTO that fer the Act-TURDS Studio fer leavin' out the Italians TOO! So many talented Italian-American actors!!!!—notta one represented at this 75th AnnieVerseEry programmed event?
BECUZ???
IMAGINED RACISM!!!! (ding it!)
I cannot see WHY or HOW such erasure is bein’ done unless it’s in the name of equity and reparations (damit!)—for some (mis-)perceived harm done. SO this, my fine friends, this giant ellipse—or ruther giant eclipse blockin’ out history! BUT it wasn’t "becuz racism" IMO as I have NEVER heard of any of these acting studios banning blacks or hispanics 'er bein' racist at all; gawdsakes, most of the members of these schools (students/ teachers) were children of immigrants! Post WWII when The Actors Studio took off—there was far (far!) more collaborative work an' mixin' of the races collaboratively speakin’ than ever: in music, in theater, in nightclubs, in film. It wuz'nt perfect, sure, but The Actor's Studio (of all places) wasn't some right wing bastion've white supremacy, no siree. (Actually, it veeered way ta the Left!)… If blacks don’t flock to opera, is opera RACIST? (no!)—though The MET is claiming it is (another story folks…later…). If Hispanic an’ Black Americans aren’t participatin’ in droves in polka contests, do we deem the Polish sponsors incorrigible racists fer excludin’ them? Do we recharacterize the history of polka by havin’ P. Diddy emcee the national convention?!
Many performers in this illustrious group've graduates an' alumni of The Actors’ Studio were very active in civil rights efforts in the late 60's and beyond (I've read my share've memoirs an' know a bit about a good number'a these performers so I know this IS so!). Many gladly did plays, movies, concerts, an' shared the stage with what they now call "bipoc" performers. (Instantly I think of Steiger & Poitier in “In the Heat of the Night” for example…)
SO why (oh why) then, would The Actor's Studio ERASE the very important history of ALL it's illustrious graduates an' students an' founders just ta VIRTUE-'effin-SIGNAL they'ze woke an’ all fer the DEI(itty)?!
WHY is this well-regarded instee-2-shun celebratin' its so-called "bipoc" hist'ry (which is non-existent) or REWRITIN' the true nature of it's REAL history by erasin' it—FULLY?!
75 Years've Taino Dance under this illustrious roof?
Say Whut? OR is this whole exercise an elaborate apologia BECUZ the 75 Years've Actors’ Studio history FAILED to include Taino Dance?!
Kin' I just shake my tin crackpot 'til it rattles some more? (Cawfee break!)
By erasin' the LONG an' impressive list of talents that were GEN-U-INELY involved, by falsely and bizarrely givin' bull-arny lip service / floortime to a host've folks that had no part've this school in it's 75 Year History, what the heck does it say about this school?
No sense've dignity? No respect or gratitude fer those that MADE IT A NAME? What duz it say; 'bout bowin' ta wokeness? About litter-ally disappearin' the real work of real actors? I'll also say fer the sake've the rah rah LGB rainbow (no more letters, sorry!) that there were a lotta GAY actors on that list (not ta mention the aforementioned gay playwrights, directors, etc) that CERTAINLY are part of the REAL n' BONA FIDE long list've major talents that brought The Actor's Studio fame n' fortune. Crickets…
Did sum'buddy threaten' ta cancel their fundin' if they didn't bend take a knee and/or bend over ta submit to this wokety racket ta' pick up that soap sailor 'er else Schwab that deck? I jus' don't know-- but it's WRONG. Wrong in every way I kin see…
Remind me agin’ folks, how many Taino actors/directors were a part of the studio's foundation?, ZERO.
So you see… this whole dog n' pony show confabulated ta’ “signal VIRCH’YOU-ALLY” is nothin’ but THIS:
NO bravo. Withholdin’ all applause. So what should The Actor's Studio do fer an encore?
They should do what we mamas call a "DO-OVER" – ya go back a few paces, an' do it properly-like, do it right, politely, no guilt, just "fix it" by getting' a new start on the matter at hand…HONOR them that deserve it an’ earned it! SHARE their award-winnin’ / memorable accomplishments! HIGHLY WRECK-AMENDED from me ta the current Act-TURDS Stoodie-Oh!
Here’s ta “cattle callin' “ out the sheep that foller' them wolves!
Daisy
Now ya kin buy me a cuppa java if ya like, alwayz grateful fer y’all!
https://ko-fi.com/daisymoses
PS if yer a patron’ve The Actors' Studio do give ‘em a piece’a yer mind on this shameful erasure of some’a the greatest ACTORS in modern history!
Closin’ with a tee-riffic tune about turnin’ folks “Inside out & Upside Down” (singers too!)
Meanwhile, no one asks our colleagues of color how they’re all suffering from tokenism exhaustion. The pendulum swings from one end to another, razing through anyone who stands in the middle raising their hand in objection. I’m waiting until the industry eats itself and then will try and make a nice meal out of the left overs. And if that time never comes, or if my inspiration never comes, so be it. Let the next generation figure it out.
Okay, here's what I found on the The Actor's Studio website:
"Notable participants in the PDU have included Edward Albee, Tennessee Williams, Norman Mailer, Harold Clurman, Mark Rydell, James Baldwin, Lorraine Hansberry, Terrence McNally, and Arthur Kopit, among many others."
I have no idea whether Hansberry and Baldwin made significant contributions to the artistic life of that place, but they were there, at least according to TAS.
As far as their BIPOC-centric celebration goes, I've accepted that the theatre industry (and just about every other industry, as well) is making this their raison-d'etre. What else can I do? Other than continue to write what I want to write and trust that someday, somewhere, there will be an audience for it.
Though I'll admit... I also harbor a fantasy of writing something entirely heretical and producing it myself. And roping you and Tonika into it somehow...:-)
