The history you present is the history I lived - that anyone lived. Like so many good movements - feminism, anti-racist - the gay and lesbian rights movement has been so obviously perverted into something it was not intended to be by nasty forces out to twist and destroy every good thing. Thank you for your detailed presentation - the many photos especially of what gay and lesbian rights was all about. And as you say, these rights should always have been honored - like women's rights, children's rights, the rights of people of all races.

I was around in these few days of olden, but I was too busy to notice.... and living completely in the universe of being a productive adult.
I am certain other parts of the country back in the 60s 70s and 80s were, like me,
fully immersed in completely different universe, the normal one.
caring for my parents this past ten years, they always had so many stories of their past. Dad said he had a very good friend that was "gay" but they did not (obviously) call it gay. They just said he was "different". Now different means you are some kind of freak? anyway, my mom told me she knew a gay guy too in her young adult years. Both of my parents were from the Netherlands and did not come to the US until 1950.
They never told us, or it was never a topic of discussion when we were kids. I think I would have been confused. Then again their were many things my parents did not share, that I wish they had.... for instance that they lived through WW2 in Holland and my father was taken up in a razzie for fit men to replace the men of Germany fighting. So my dad was kind of a POW. Anyway, I did not learn that until I was in my 20s and then it was kind of shocking because I was so proud of their efforts in helping others during that war.
Yup, many parts of the USA likely had no idea 'bout any of this but it saddens me that an entire well intended movement (basic rights for gays / lesbians) got so turribly co-opted that all folks can (logically--if ya look at it today) see is that it's all bad and likely wuz all bad (which wasn't the case at all). I appreciate seeing those photos. I’d forgotten how much pride parade was about feeling comfortable being out of the closet and celebrating the fact that you didn’t have to hide. And sometime in the early oughts, it changed. Actually, I was on tour in Frisco in 2006 and they had something called the Folsom Parade and my theatre company and I went to promote our play, we were pretty stunned by the sheer amount of people doing the full Monty. Occasionally, we would see people engaged in fellatio and other intimidate acts with no abandon. This was on a public street, where actual people lived and I’ll never forget a father trying to take his 4-5 yo daughter home and had to walk her and cover her eyes as they entered their house. I never saw pride the same way again. This wasn’t about being gay. It was about being obscene in public view. I would have had the same reaction if it was straight people doing it. And I’m coming from an industry made of many of the rainbow order, many of them friends, and many who are disgusted with the promotion of any sexual elements and orientation towards children.

I appreciate seeing those photos. I’d forgotten how much pride parade was about feeling comfortable being out of the closet and celebrating the fact that you didn’t have to hide. And sometime in the early oughts, it changed. Actually, I was on tour in Frisco in 2006 and they had something called the Folsom Parade and my theatre company and I went to promote our play, we were pretty stunned by the sheer amount of people doing the full Monty. Occasionally, we would see people engaged in fellatio and other intimidate acts with no abandon. This was on a public street, where actual people lived and I’ll never forget a father trying to take his 4-5 yo daughter home and had to walk her and cover her eyes as they entered their house. I never saw pride the same way again. This wasn’t about being gay. It was about being obscene in public view. I would have had the same reaction if it was straight people doing it. And I’m coming from an industry made of many of the rainbow order, many of them friends, and many who are disgusted with the promotion of any sexual elements and orientation towards children.

OMG that poor little four year old--yes, it was about love 'n fun--I went ta some of those parades with fellow "show folks"--I think in one've 'em I mentioned our friend the gay Macy's Santa marchin'--it's not a bad gig, lol. I NEVER sawr anything that foul--what'cha saw--I would'a been mortified. The "woist" I witnessed was some fellas in chaps WITH undies on (not their normal look but they modified for public view)-- by the early oughts I was purdy much done as I had my eldest in 02. But you are totally right--it warn't about bein' gay--it was about being obscene--an' even comin' from the "biz"--that ain't OK in any way--it denigrates the old skool gays too.
The days of the peaceful non-obscene "groovy kind of love" with boys in tube socks were fun an' all were welcome--nuttin' doity!--kid-safe. Not garish either--no freaky "pup players"--as Diana Ross sang (an' all the boys I knew loved Diana!), "where did our love go?"--originally the movement was really about that... golly how it got co-opted!
